CONGRATULATORY  MESSAGE

For UN Vesak Day 2019

United Nations Day of Vesak is the day on which Buddhists across the world commemorate the birth, the attainment of enlightenment and the great demise of the Lord Buddha. As a token of paying the greatest possible gratitude to the Lord Buddha, this year we assemble to share Dhamma knowledge here in Vietnam, the host country for the 16th United Nations day of Vesak Celebrations 2019. In this regard, I would like to take an opportunity to express my deepest appreciations for your great endeavor to make this grand celebration happen.

To examine the main theme of this conference which is “Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies, it is found to be relevant to the tradition set by the Buddha himself over two and half millennia ago. Starting from the day the Buddha attained the Enlightenment until the day of His great demise, he set himself as an exemplary person who took the role of religious leader, not just by accepting the honors and venerations from the world but by unfailingly fulfilling duties to be performed for the welfare and happiness of the world.

The theme is also relevant for tackling the rapidly growing challenges in the materially advanced world. It is undeniable fact that the advancement of information and technology helps the society develop in various manner. In order to keep the developed society sustainable, it is time for Buddhists scholars to discuss the intertwined nature of rights and responsibilities from the Buddhist perspective. It is my sincere hope and expectation that people from all walks of life will be greatly benefited from this conference.
