For UN Vesak Day 2019

I am honored to send a congratulatory message to the Distinguished Guests attending the United Nations Day of Vesak 2019 (UNDV) to be organized at the International Conference Center Tam Chúc, Hà Nam, Vietnam. On behalf of the leadership of the Home Ministry of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and myself, I wish to send to you my warmest greetings and my best congratulations. Let me also send my best wishes for peace and happiness to all Buddhists on the five continents.

It is not a coincidence that the United Nations has recognized the Day of Vesak as an international religious and cultural festival. The resolution from the UN General Assembly states that the teachings of the Buddha and his messages of loving-kindness, compassion and good heart have converted millions of people”; it is precisely, these moral, cultural, peaceful and friendly values of Buddhism that have served as a fundamental basis for that selection.

This year 2019, marks the third time that Vietnam will organize the UN Day of Vesak (UNDV). This situation demonstrates that Vietnam is a credible nation and becoming a meeting place to celebrate the human moral and cultural values that are recognized by the United Nations. These are living examples that confirm Vietnam as an active and responsible member of the United Nations.

In respect for the Day of Vesak celebration, each of us should with a spirit of solidarity; focus on sharing and making efforts to spread and realize the Buddhas messages on loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, peace and tolerance. In this way, we contribute to realizing the United Nations millennium goals of reducing famine and poverty, conserving human culture, protecting the environment and meeting the challenge of climate change. We should strive to find common solutions to these challenges and build a bright future for our generation and future ones.

I believe that the UNDV 2019 organized in Vietnam will strengthen and deepen solidarity among Buddhists on all five continents and the celebration activities will enhance the spirit of tolerance and solidarity that contributes to peace, cooperation, development and progress of society.

Best wishes for a peaceful and happy Vesak and together let us strive for a bright future with peace and happiness for humanity.

Government of Vietnam,
